Because of its history and its location within a large urban area, the Hayward Fault is the focus of many studies. UC Berkeley and the US Geological Survey monitor the fault constantly with a variety of sensitive instruments, such as seismometers, creepmeters, strainmeters, and GPS equipment. These instruments, as well as computer modeling, historical accounts of earthquakes, geological mapping, trenching, and other techniques, have been used to understand the past, present behavior of the fault and to assess future hazards. The links below provide more information on some of these studies and on the monitoring infrastructure.
